How to Get the Best
Results From Liposuction

One of the most amazing discoveries in the history of Plastic Surgery is that fat can be literally vacuumed from our body.   Though improvements have been made, time has proven this to be a very safe and effective technique.  In fact, liposuction is not only one of the safest of all surgeries performed by all specialties; it is the safest procedure among cosmetic surgery alternatives for patients considering body contouring.   Liposuction is so versatile that it can be performed by itself or in conjunction with other body contouring procedures.

Significant improvements can be made when liposuction, or lip sculpture, is performed by itself.  When combined with other procedures, results can have a great impact on the torso from the synergies between suction and skin removal procedures.   Suction is very commonly performed with tummy tucks and can also be done with arm and leg sculpting.
One should think of the effect of liposuction as “taking down the bumps”.   In other words, suction can flatten out areas which stick out in certain patients.   This smoothing out of the body leads to a narrowing of the body and the creation of a “straight line effect.”    The straight line effect results when one can draw a straight line down the edges of the body.  This effect contributes to the svelte, trim look of youth.  So liposuction takes down the bumps resulting in a trim and youthful appearance.

But is liposuction safe?  The best way to understand the answer to this question is to understand how liposuction is performed and to compare it to other types of plastic surgery.  In most plastic surgery procedures, as in a tummy tuck, an incision is made, a space is created under the skin and the skin is pulled down and the excess skin is removed.  The excess skin has been removed but the blood supply to the remaining skin is diminished.  With time, the blood supply to this skin increases to normal.  The exact opposite occurs with liposuction.

During a liposuction procedure, a very small opening is made in the skin and a thin hollow wand is inserted beneath the skin in the area of fat excess.  The wand is attached to a medical device which creates suction.  The wand is drawn back and forth, and, as it moves through the area of fat, it follows the path of least resistance.  This tissue is composed of fat and blood vessels which course from beneath and come up to the skin.  The path of least resistance for the wand is the fat and so the suction removes only the fat and not the blood vessels, thus preserving the entire blood supply to the skin.  So compared to most procedures where the blood supply is diminished, the blood supply in a liposuction surgery is not decreased, thus preserving nutrition and oxygen to the healing tissues.  Liposuction is therefore safer than other forms of body contouring plastic surgery.

"I researched several surgeons before selection Dr. Newman, I had many questions and concerns leading up to my surgery and Dr. Newman and his staff always took the time to answer every questions truthfully. It was very personal and intimate experience and Dr. Newman and staff always made me feel like a friend as opposed to a patient. Most importantly I could not be more pleased with my new look….I has breast enlargement."
