Breast Augmentation After Weight
Loss
By David A. Newman, M.D.
The achievement of significant
weight loss which ultimately
leads to the arrival near
one’s goal weight is a significant
milestone in a person’s life.
It marks a great accomplishment
and a triumph over genetic
predetermination, psychological
challenges and the complex
environmental landscape we
all must face. Getting down
to normal weight leaves a
deeply satisfying sense of
fulfillment which can linger
on for many months to years.
This contentment helps to
lay the groundwork for continued
success.
Besides this present of personal
satisfaction, one of the greatest
gifts a person can receive
after losing a significant
amount of weight is the gift
of plastic surgery. Surgical
procedures certainly don’t
return someone to their youth
but they can restore near
normal form and may also help
to re-establish normal function.
Weight gain can affect our
skin and the structures which
support it. The heavy tissues
can stretch skin and increase
its length and can result
in damage to elastic fibers.
This excessive skin can then
rub against adjacent skin
and result in rashes and abrasions.
Skin that is stretched out
can also hang down, and when
we bend over, this distant
weight puts a strain on our
back.
As we gain weight during our
lives, time also flitters
away. So once we have achieved
near normal weight with weight
control, we not only have
to address the skin damage
from the weight gain but also
the effects of the ravages
of time on our skin, soft
tissues and even our bones.
It is interesting that though
most patients who gain weight
increase their cup size, some
women can have a paradoxical
decrease in breast volume
after weight gain. The causes
include a genetic predisposition,
the effects of the aging process
including breast feeding and
pregnancy and possibly other
factors. Likewise, weight
loss almost always leads to
a decrease in breast size
but sometimes breast do not
become smaller after weight
loss. After a careful assessment
of breast shape and volume,
breast augmentation to increase
breast size is one of the
many options available to
improve both size and shape
of the breast. Breast implants
can be combined with breast
lifts, otherwise known as
mastopexy surgery. Mastopexy
surgery can raise the level
of the breast to increase
the chance for fullness of
the upper portion of the breast.
Breast implants can also help
to create fullness and also
improve projection of the
breast. Projection is the
quality where the breasts
stick out to create their
beautiful shape. Since there
are at least several options
for most patients, it is a
good idea to discuss these
options at length with a plastic
surgeon who can work with
you toward achieving your
best cosmetic result.

"I researched
several surgeons before selection
Dr. Newman, I had many questions
and concerns leading up to
my surgery and Dr. Newman
and his staff always took
the time to answer every questions
truthfully. It was very personal
and intimate experience and
Dr. Newman and staff always
made me feel like a friend
as opposed to a patient. Most
importantly I could not be
more pleased with my new look….I
has breast enlargement."
