Discount Breast Augmentation
By David A. Newman, M.D.
There is no question that
when patients seek consultation
for breast augmentation
with a plastic surgeon,
they expect that they will
receive the best care imaginable.
But why wouldn’t they expect
the best care? They live
in one of the greatest
countries in the world
where the best medical
care is available.
But all care is not equal
and it therefore becomes the
responsibility of the patient
to set out on a journey of
discovery to find out exactly
what kind of care they will
receive during and after
their breast augmentation
procedure. That might seem
obvious because don’t we all
investigate which mortgages
are the best for us? And
we spend days, months, and
even years deciding which
home will provide the beautiful
backdrop for most of our
lives. Patients should therefore
be choosy about their health
care providers in regards
to the very important decisions
of where and how to have
plastic surgery care, and
specifically breast augmentation.
First of all, it may be good
to discuss why we would not
research our plastic surgeon
to the extent we look into
other purchases, like our
home. We might just accept
that, since one has the title
“MD”, that that physician
is doing their best, and has
the best interests of the
patient at heart. One might
term this “automatic acceptance”,
or, in other words just accepting
that “the doctor knows best
what is good for me and I
should just listen to him.”
Let’s create an imaginary
consultation where a patient
presents for evaluation regarding
breast augmentation. The
doctor is late and the patient
has to wait an hour to see
the doctor but instead speaks
with a nurse. Finally, the
doctor sees the patient but
the consultation lasts five
to ten minutes. The doctor
acts as if he knows what is
best for the patient but doesn’t
really discuss all of the
options with the patient but
rather delegates this responsibility
to the staff or simply tells
the patient that he can do
whatever the patient wishes.
Benefits and risks are not
discussed with the patient,
and especially benefits and
downsides of the different
kinds of breast implants are
not talked about. A fee
for the surgery is then given,
which may be a “bargain breast
augmentation price” or an
“inexpensive breast augmentation
price”, or even an average
price or high price for the
surgery. The patient leaves
her encounter with the knowledge
that she will have to travel
to have her surgery but that
she is being treated by “the
best” because she had the
impression during her meeting
with the doctor that he thought
he was the best. Read
