Breast Enhancement:
Secret Wishes of the Breast
Augmentation Patient
By David A. Newman, M.D.
The movie “What Women Want”
starring Helen Hunt and Mel
Gibson lightheartedly reveals
the inner thoughts of both
women and men as men try
to understand what the female
of our species wishes from
relationships and life in
general. There are many different
ways to read the meaning of
this drama but common threads
among these interpretations
are that women simply wish
to be heard and that they
wish to play a part in controlling
their own destiny.
When women consult a plastic
surgeon regarding breast
augmentation, they vocalize
their wishes and hopes to
improve what nature has
either not amply provided
or has taken away as the
result of pregnancy, breast
feeding, and the effects
of time. It is very interesting
to me that many patients
reveal that they have been
thinking about breast enlargement
for at least two to three
years before finally deciding
to look into actually having
the surgery. This implies
that women think a lot
about breast augmentation.
But what do they think
about?
I have had the privilege to
listen to many of my patients
reveal what they want from
breast augmentation. They
know I will listen and
try to understand so it’s
easy for them to discuss their
feelings openly..
I get the general impression
that women want to feel sexy
and confident but they have
been trained to think that
these feelings go opposite
of what they have been taught:
that they should be good moms
and not be concerned with
their own wishes. Somehow
the simple wish to achieve
satisfactory breast shape
and size triggers these strong
emotions that seem to go counter
to what women have been trained
to believe. At the risk
of sounding like Mr. Spock,
from series “Star Trek”, and
as a man I would say “that’s
not logical”, but that reveals
one of the big differences
in the way that men and women
think. Most men decide which
idea is the most important
and abandon the other less
meaningful ideas, even at
the expense of losing something
important. On the other hand,
women are able to retain and
juggle different ideas. They
don’t seem to let go of any
of them and thus the conflict
arises when ideas oppose each
other.
But that doesn’t mean that
there can’t be a successful
resolution to these series
of opposites. It is clearly
possible to be sexy, a great
mother, and have good breast
shape and size all at the
same time! So I don’t presume
to know what women think but
I suspect that some patients
perceive this as a compromise
and others feel they are able
to retain all of these qualities
together. Let’s talk about
other qualities of the successful
breast augmentation which
lead to a satisfying outcome. Read

"I researched
several surgeons before selection
Dr. Newman, I had many questions
and concerns leading up to
my surgery and Dr. Newman
and his staff always took
the time to answer every questions
truthfully. It was very personal
and intimate experience and
Dr. Newman and staff always
made me feel like a friend
as opposed to a patient. Most
importantly I could not be
more pleased with my new look….I
has breast enlargement."
