Silicone or Saline: A Woman's
Choice
By David A. Newman, M.D.
According to recent studies,
breast augmentation surgery
has a patient satisfaction
rate of 95 percent, one of
the highest of any procedure
performed today. Women
who are contemplating breast
augmentation have a choice
of both implant shape and
the fill of the implant. There
are two choices of fill which
include saline (salt water)
implants and silicone gel
breast implants. Only you
and your plastic surgeon can
decide which fill choice works
best for you.
One of the most misunderstood
ideas about implants revolves
around the concept that one
implant is better than the
other. In fact, it's
quite common for patients
to tell a plastic surgeon "I
hear that silicone implants
are better than saline because
they cost more," or "my
mom had some problems with
her silicone gel implants
so saline must be better".
A basic idea about all implants
is that there is no one best
implant, but there may be
a better choice for a specific
patient. All implants
have pluses and minuses and
it is very important to know
all of the benefits of the
fills prior to your procedure.
Each patient has different
needs which must be addressed
at consultation.
Saline has several advantages
over silicone breast implants. It
is less expensive, and, if
deflation occurs, the body
will absorb the salt water
and you will know that there
has been a deflation right
away.
Silicone implants have been
determined to be very safe
and have been reapproved by
the FDA.
But, if you do not want to
have silicone in your body,
you should know that there
really is no such thing as
a silicone free implant, because
even the saline implant has
shell made from silicone. Read

"I researched
several surgeons before selection
Dr. Newman, I had many questions
and concerns leading up to
my surgery and Dr. Newman
and his staff always took
the time to answer every questions
truthfully. It was very personal
and intimate experience and
Dr. Newman and staff always
made me feel like a friend
as opposed to a patient. Most
importantly I could not be
more pleased with my new look….I
has breast enlargement."
