How to Care for your Skin
By David A. Newman, M.D.
There are many different standards
of beauty but no matter who
is doing the measuring, all
criteria include healthy,
vibrant, and youthful skin.
Our cover reflects our experiences,
our genetics and life choices.
It reflects lifestyles,
the effect of the environment
in which we live, and the
passing of years. From
your very birth, the skin
that was treated with baby
lotion was cared for and
protected. This mortal
coil demands care and maintenance
and it is in our best interest
to provide support for
our skin. So how do we
maintain our skin’s youthful
appearance?
Effective skin care strategies
can be divided into those
which work from the outside
in and those which work from
the inside outwards. There
is simply nothing we can do
to alter our genetics, but
we can very well protect ourselves
from the sun’s damaging rays
which can help prevent discoloration,
wrinkling, and skin cancer
during our lifetime. Wearing
sunscreen, makeup, a wide
brimmed hat and sunglasses
as well as tight weaved garments
can help decrease sun exposure.
Sunscreen and moisturizers
can also protect your skin
from the effects smoke, pollution,
wind and heat.
We can protect our skin from
the inside in several ways.
A healthy diet gives the skin
nutrients and drinking water
during the day keeps the skin
hydrated and helps the skin
filter out toxins. And by
avoiding smoking and secondary
smoke, the skin can retain
a greater number of elastic
fibers as we age. Cigarette
smoke also narrows the arteries
which bring oxygen and other
nutrients to the skin, and
so its avoidance is doubly
beneficial.
And one never hears the doctor
say, “I think you are exercising
too much…”. Regular exercise
plays a big role in keeping
your skin healthy by improving
heart function and allowing
the blood vessels to carry
more oxygen and nutrients
to your skin. Oxygen supports
our skin’s collagen fibers
and keeps the skin firm and
young looking.
But no matter how much we
care for our skin, the effects
of the aging process and the
pull of gravity eventually
lead to skin laxity and drooping,
as well as wrinkling of the
skin’s surface. And with
age we also lose the fullness
of our faces as fat is lost.
Fat also redistribute itself
to unwanted places as in creation
of joweling, and fullness
of the neck.
Plastic surgeons can help
patients revitalize their
skin. Skin care regimens
can be crafted to a particular
patient’s skin care type.
And facial plastic surgery
procedures can be performed
to return a patient’s form
to a more youthful appearance.
Plastic surgeons have knowledge
and skill in the full range
of cosmetic procedures to
rejuvenate and restore skin.

"I researched
several surgeons before selection
Dr. Newman, I had many questions
and concerns leading up to
my surgery and Dr. Newman
and his staff always took
the time to answer every questions
truthfully. It was very personal
and intimate experience and
Dr. Newman and staff always
made me feel like a friend
as opposed to a patient. Most
importantly I could not be
more pleased with my new look….I
has breast enlargement."
