Featured Patient
The patient is a 32 year old
Temecula woman and mother
of three who felt that her
tummy stuck out too far despite
not being overweight. She
also noted excess skin of
the lower abdomen when she
sat down. She thought that
the fullness in her hips made
her look heavy. She had
a tummy tuck with Temecula
Plastic Surgeon Dr. Newman,
with liposculpture of the
hips. The full tummy tuck,
also called a standard tummy
tuck or standard abdominoplasty,
treats not only excess skin
of the upper and lower abdomen
but also flattens the entire
abdomen by tightening the
muscle layer of the front
of the abdomen. Actually,
what the plastic surgeon really
tightens is fascia, which
are layers of thin white sheets
all compressed into one strong
layer that covers the front
of the abdomen under the skin.
The fascia is the "container" of
the abdomen . Pregnancy and
weight gain stretch the abdominal
fascia and after pregnancy
the fascia remains loose permanently.
As the patient described,
when the fascia is stretched
out it can make the patient
look alot heavier than they
actually are because the loose
fascia makes their abdomen
stick out. In this patient,
liposuction of the hips had
a big effect on the patient's
appearance. Liposuction, or
liposculpture, removes unwanted
fat from specific areas of
the body. Patients who
have a tummy tuck almost
always have suction of the
hips. Liposculpture
allows the plastic surgeon
to extend treatment around
the body without extending
the scar and helps to decrease
the waistline measurement.
